|
|
I just read this really sad news article on yahoo.com, that an innocent Wal-Mart worker was trampled to death at an American outlet.
who is to blame?
the shoppers, who were so blinded by consumerism that they took a man's life and rushed past his body lying on the ground in a mad pursuit of material things?
Or is Wal-Mart management, for psyching up customers with first come, first served and door-buster deals but not implementing any safety measures?
Probably both!
When I first read this news article I asked myself, where is humanity heading? What has happened to common courtesy? I thought of old black and white movies with all the polite characters and their excellent manners and of times when etiquette was not only a strange word. When “be polite at all times” was the golden rule. … It is sad that respect to others and good manners are not a given anymore.
This tragic incident is for sure the fault of the crowd that behaved in a way that is simply unacceptable. There must have been some very bad-mannered bargain seekers who were responsible for the overly aggressive and negative crowd dynamics. But on the other hand, maybe some of the shoppers did not even register that there were people falling down and getting injured. They were being pushed from all sides and their only choice was to move forward. (Most of us have been stuck in a crowd before, being pushed from all sides praying not get knocked down. We knew when we stopped, we would fall, so just kept our feet moving...). Many of them probably didn’t see this as a life and death situation, but fact is that people were getting hurt.
I think that Wal-Mart should be also held responsible for the death of that employee. They’ve been in this business long enough to prevent this. Obviously they did a good job advertising the sale event - shown by the fact that hundreds of customers rushed to the store at 5:00 am willing to wait in line for hours. They must know their customers by now. They should have implemented security measures to control the crowd. They could have let in the people in small chunks.
Thousands of other stores, with millions customers involved managed to organize their black Friday sale events just fine without any major incidents. Those stores gave some thought to security. Wal-Mart did obviously not.
