Hello,
Perhaps politics is thought to be a bit heavy for a dating site!!
Might get things going with opinions on the Al-Megrahi debacle?
I think it was the right decision possibly executed too soon but handled rather badly. |

Hello!
I don't know whether to agree with you or not. The perfect society is something we might all aspire to, but we are so far away from it, and then there is the real world to cope with. So many issues.
It would help if we, the general public actually knew what the truths were. Can't help feeling cynical about politics and politicians, I feel like we are living in a vacuum where the truth is out there somewhere!! |

Hello Aricia,
I agree there are probably many aspects of this case that are unknown and likely to stay that way to suit leaders and politicians involved with their trade and political deals etc.
However I don't feel this affects the basic premise of release on compassionate grounds. Even if he was guilty he is dying and as such we put ourselves ethically above "terrorists" and the like by showing compassion and allowing him to die at home with his family. You might argue about the timing ie three months or one month but given the uncertainty of such diagnoses I suppose it is better to err on the side of caution.
I have asked myself if I would come to the same conclusion if it was Hitler in this situation.
What do you think? |

Actually, I think there are situations when different measures must prevail.
I believe the decision should have been taken by a delegated group of representatives for the victims, not by some detached Scottish Minister.
One can also lead a life of personal compassion without losing sight of alternative world views and the effects of sending out the wrong messages.
Better to take a long term view (that might alter immediate actions) than send out messages of weakness and invite contempt, which then results in further carnage. |

The whole point of the law being administered by the state is of course to detach it from emotion and thus hopefully achieve justice rather than revenge.
I don't think showing compassion is a form of weakness as it results from having the power in the situation concerned to opt for compassion or not.
This assumes that the compassion is excercised genuinely and hopefully can be shown to be so and has not come about as the result of extraneous pressures. |

Hello again!
Global politics is a game of chess in which we are all compulsory players. It is unwise, I believe, to detach ourselves from that in an attempt to expunge our own conscience with no regard to the outcome.
In addition, one rarely gets justice under law. Laws are made for political reasons and as a strategy for controlling societies. There bear no relationship to morality and are not formed for moral purposes.
Morality is left to the leading religions to sort out. That is why the world is so globally disfunctional. |
