Set the scene

Kindergarten and Mrs. Geoffrey is teaching the class to count to ten. She has already spent considerable time teaching the kids using their fingers

Mrs. Geoffrey: ‘OK Timmy can you count to ten?’

Timmy: proudly, and while displays his fingers and as he counts he also folds the fingers. ‘1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10’ and looks at the teacher triumphantly

Mrs. Geoffrey: ‘Very good Timmy, now can you count without using your fingers? Like a grown up boy? asks in a challenging voice 'Lets keep your hands on your side and try.' Says the teacher in a mellow but a guiding voice

Timmy keeps his arms on his side and makes a brave effort


Timmy: ‘one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten’

The teacher interrupts before the child has had a chance to gauge success


Mrs. Geoffrey: ‘ I saw that…….. you were still using your fingers Timmy. Now keep your hands behind you and count again’ obviously getting a bit impatient by now

Timmy: ‘one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten’

Mrs. Geoffrey: ‘Timmy this will not do ………please put your hands in you pocket and count to ten.’ Says the exhausted teacher

Timmy: ‘one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, ELEVEN’
